Hookers and Blow

It keeps coming up in discussion of 5th Edition: magic item stores are no longer assumed and players no longer have to spend a set amount of gold on treasure. So what do characters spend their money on? I always jokingly respond with the same thing, and finally decided it needed to be drawn.

Magic item shops are an interesting cash sink. PCs collect vast amounts of extra gold which the game requires they spend on magic items to increase their power so they can fight harder and harder monsters. The net result is no wealth: characters have millions of gold pieces in equipment and are carrying the fortunes of a nation on their person but they have little disposable income. But players have become so accustomed to their money being budgeted away for them that they now have no idea what to do with their accumulated treasure. In a game of fantasy and imagination, people don’t know what to do with a fictitious fortune.
