Lord of the Pawns
I wonder what would have happened had Gandalf not told Frodo to keep the Ring “secret and safe”. Sure, it’s a useful magic item, but if you don’t plan om getting up to any invisible shenanigans then it’s just an extra valuable bit of jewellery that can pay for months or years of hard drinking. It’s not like Frodo had a job or reliable source of income.
An amusing joke, but not at all Tolkein-accurate.
Frodo was quite wealthy, having inherited a fortune at the same time he inherited the Ring. The Ring was not extra valuable as jewelry seeming an ordinary gold ring to mundane eyes. Also, the Ring never allowed itself to be sold or given away.
Well, a ring of invisibility sounds like a reliable source of income to me…
reminds me of a time when our DM wanted us to start with almost no equipment. When I asked why my warrior didn’t have his falchion, he replied “You were short on money; you had to sell it”.
To which I replied: “I’m a neutral evil warrior. If I’m short on cash, I don’t sell my weapon, I use it.”
Then the campaign started. The others looked at my sword and asked the Master “why does he get a good weapon and we don’t?”
My answer: “don’t make me show you why”.
