Questionable Sanity

Intelligent magic items are an understated fantasy trope. It’s been in the genre since Elric and Stormbringer, and even the One Ring was quasi-intelligent or at least possessing of a dark will. But they’re a little more common in Dungeons & Dragons than in its source material, both in the game and in its licensed fiction. Likely because intelligent items interesting and while not being overused.

Still, there’s something odd about a weapon that communicates telepathically. You have to ask: is it really a magic intelligent weapon that speaks only with its owner… or is the wielder not right in the head? You cannot be entirely sane if your profession is delving into ancient forgotten tombs and ruins populated by horrors. After a few days sleeping in the Underdark I might start talking to my weaponry as well.
