Random Unicounter

You can have a random encounters ranging from meeting a travelling merchant or a band of goblins. But unless it’s an elderly and exceptionally unarmed humanoid, the default assumption of the party is that they are discovering a monster, and they will attack without warning or question.

DMs, if you want to send your party into spasms of guilt, have that figure moving through the woods be a middle aged hunter teaching their child how to find game. When the bushes start rustling and the figure is seen, it will almost certainly be peppered with arrows. This will lead to remorse or, potentially, an incident of first degree murder after the players realise they’re already guilty of manslaughter and it’s easier to remove the remaining witnesses.
