Resource Micromanagement

Role-playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons have elements of resource management. Most classes have a resource that recharges each day that must be carefully used at a controlled rate to maintain the character’s effectiveness over multiple combat encounters. Spellcasters, such as the wizard, have their spells while monks have ki, barbarians have rage, bards have bardic music, and warriors have how badly they need food. There are also consumable magical items such as potions or wands that can be used to turn the tide of battle.

But not all players can manage resources. Some players horde items and save a spell or other resource, even in the face of unspeakable odds. They have trouble expending all their resources and leaving themselves potentially helpless.
