School for the Gifted

Whenever we get to a locked door, one of the players at my table invariably asks this question, only half teasing. Because he knows the GM is the kind who will teasingly reply “the door doesn’t move” when we walk up and push. If done incorrectly, this can come across as a dick move. You have to wait just long enough that the begin to consider other solutions or try to pick the door before revealing it opens if pulled, but not so long that it feels like the characters are being treated as morons for not attempting the obvious.

But, then again, who hasn’t stood outside a door with a bunch of other people who all assumed the first person tried the door and found it locked?
