Slots to Burn
When you’re low levels, every spell slot is a precious jewel to be hoarded and used carefully. After a few levels, it’s significantly easier to “waste” spell slots on smaller tasks. By the time you’re high levels, you have enough 1st and 2nd spell slots to waste a few on exceedingly trivial things, such as practical jokes or just making sure your camp is adequately comfortable.
I remember a mid-level wizard, which benevolently tried to help a bunch of villagers whose cottages had been covered by a thick layer of snow.
Yes, of course he used his wand of fireballs.
And yes, the overlap area caught fire by the third one, so the cleric had to douse the flames with create water and some buckets…
It still strikes me as odd that of all the magical items created, the practical stuff has always been relegated to the obscure splatbooks. No default self-starting portable firepits, no self-heating metal cooking implements, and no perfume bottles capable of removing all grime and stench from a party fresh from defeating the local wererats in the sewers.
