Summoning Cycle

Summoning a fiendish creature, such as a demon or devil, is a trope of fantasy fiction. Of fiction really, with the story of Faust being ages old. This has always been an awkward fit with the D&D rules as summoning a demon requires powerful magic. Faust wouldn’t have needed to strike a deal with Mephistopheles for unlimited knowledge, as he’d already have to be a high level wizard. There have been a few attempts around this, creating ritual spellcasting rules and special rites that can be performed without using spell slots. But these rules have never been a perfect fit, as they’re always designed to prevent player abuse. Just in case player characters decided to summon a few devils I guess…
