“I’m not last in initiative, I’m first in initiative for the second turn.”

There are advantage to going last. The battlefield has been established and the enemies have closed the gap between themselves and the party. You know who to attack, so you can focus fire. However… your allies missed an opportunity to benefit from any buffs you could provide, and there’s less opportunity to hit enemies with an area of effect spell without catching allies in the blast. But after that first round, being fast or slow doesn’t really matter much. There are variants, where you roll every round, but this seems potentially slower.

The most interesting variant for initiative I’ve seen came with MWP’s Marvel Heroic Roleplaying, where initiate wasn’t rolled beyond deciding who acts first. The person who went first decided who would go next, and each person after passed initiative to another creature. Which adds some neat strategy to initiative.
