Through the Mind’s Leering Eye

There’s nothing formally puritanical about paladins: you could have a paladin of a fertility or sexuality deity that is pro-sex or even promiscuous. This is especially true in 5th Edition where paladins can be any alignment provided they follow certain oaths and tenets, freeing paladins to worship traditionally more chaotic and freedom-focused gods in established pantheons.

However, as the assorted religions of western religion are so very anti-sex, it’s common to transpose those religious beliefs and values onto other non-evil fantasy religions. That’s simply the portrayal of religion most people are aware of, so it makes sense and allows the fantastical faiths to feel more real and relatable. But it does mean these fictional churches have the same baggage and hang-ups as the real world, for better or worse.
