Weird Science

There are a good half-dozen monsters called out in various monster books as being the result of mad wizards and their experiments. To justify the bizarre creature that is an owlbear, the books quite literally say “a wizard did it”. Which begs the question: what the hell kind of sick, twisted experiment nets an owlbear as a result?

I can only think of one, and the PG-nature of the site prevents me from elaborating further.

And why only dangerous monsters? Shouldn’t there be innumerable monsters that are annoying? Or are twisted monstrosities that long for the release only death can bring? Or maybe even one useful creature that can become a productive member of society. I imagine this is like killer bees: Africanized bees are one of the first things people think of when discussing animal crossbreeding and animals like mules and beefalo.
